Finding specialist children's physiotherapy in Derbyshire and Staffordshire can feel overwhelming. This guide explains what paediatric physiotherapy involves, what conditions it can help with, and how home visits work for children across our region.

What is children's physiotherapy?

Paediatric physiotherapy is specialist physiotherapy for babies, children, and young people up to the age of 25. Unlike adult physiotherapy, children's physio requires an understanding of child development, neurological conditions specific to children, and how to engage children positively in treatment.

Children's physiotherapists work with young people who have:

  • Developmental delay or concerns about milestones
  • Neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy or hypermobility
  • Musculoskeletal problems — flat feet, toe walking, growing pains
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation (including Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy)
  • Sports injuries and activity-related problems
  • Complex needs requiring hydrotherapy or specialist equipment

Children's physiotherapy home visits in Derbyshire and Staffordshire

The Buzzy Bees team, led by Claire Williamson, provides home-visit children's physiotherapy across Derby, Chesterfield, Matlock, Buxton, and the rest of Derbyshire, as well as Stoke-on-Trent, Stafford, Burton upon Trent, and Staffordshire more broadly.

Home visits for children's physiotherapy have significant advantages:

  • Child is more relaxed in their own familiar environment
  • No travel stress for families — especially important for children with complex needs
  • Home environment is assessed for any adaptations or equipment needed
  • Parents and siblings can be naturally involved in treatment
  • School and nursery visits also available — treatment in the child's school setting

Conditions we treat in children and young people

Developmental delay and Baby MOT

If you have concerns about your baby or toddler's development — whether they're not rolling, sitting, standing, or walking as expected — an early assessment can provide valuable reassurance or timely intervention.

Our Baby MOT is a developmental assessment for babies that includes a detailed written programme and practical advice for parents. Read our complete Baby MOT guide →

Cerebral palsy

Cerebral palsy (CP) is one of the most common conditions treated by paediatric physiotherapists. Claire and the Buzzy Bees team have extensive experience supporting children and young people with CP, including:

  • Spastic, athetoid, and ataxic cerebral palsy
  • GMFCS levels I–V
  • Post-Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) rehabilitation
  • CPIP (Cerebral Palsy Integrated Pathway) assessments and reports
  • Lycra orthoses provision (DM Orthotics certified)

Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) rehabilitation

SDR is a surgical procedure that reduces spasticity in children with cerebral palsy. Post-operative rehabilitation is intensive and begins very soon after surgery. The Buzzy Bees team provides specialist SDR rehabilitation at home, enabling children to achieve the best outcomes from surgery.

Hypermobility and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome

Hypermobility in children and teenagers can cause widespread joint pain, fatigue, and instability. Physiotherapy focuses on strengthening the muscles around joints, improving proprioception, and building functional activity tolerance.

Toe walking

Persistent toe walking beyond age 3 may indicate an underlying condition. Physiotherapy assessment can identify the cause and provide a targeted treatment plan, which may include stretching programmes, orthoses, or hydrotherapy.

Musculoskeletal and sports injuries in young people

Children and teenagers playing sport are at risk of a range of musculoskeletal injuries. Osgood-Schlatter disease, Sever's disease, ankle sprains, and growing pains all benefit from physiotherapy assessment and management.

Hydrotherapy for children in Derbyshire and Staffordshire

Hydrotherapy — physiotherapy in a heated pool — can be transformative for children with complex neurological or musculoskeletal conditions. The warmth and buoyancy of water reduces the impact of gravity, allowing movements that may be impossible on land.

The Buzzy Bees team offers hydrotherapy sessions across Derbyshire and Staffordshire. Read our complete guide to hydrotherapy for children →

EHCP physiotherapy reports

An Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) is a legal document for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). A physiotherapy assessment and report is often required to support an EHCP application or review.

Claire Williamson provides detailed, professional EHCP physiotherapy reports for children across Derbyshire and Staffordshire. Read our guide to EHCP physiotherapy reports →

Lycra orthoses

Lycra orthoses (dynamic lycra garments) can help children with cerebral palsy, hypermobility, and other conditions by providing gentle sensory feedback and improving posture and movement patterns. Claire is certified by DM Orthotics to measure and provide Lycra garments.
