Hip and knee replacements are among the most common planned surgeries in the UK. If you're recovering from joint replacement surgery in Warwickshire, home-based physiotherapy can make your rehabilitation easier, more effective, and far more comfortable than travelling to a clinic.

Why start physiotherapy early after surgery?

Research consistently shows that early physiotherapy after hip or knee replacement leads to better outcomes. Starting within the first few weeks helps:

  • Reduce swelling and stiffness: Gentle movement and exercises prevent the joint from becoming stiff.
  • Restore range of motion: Guided exercises help you regain the ability to bend and straighten your new joint.
  • Rebuild muscle strength: Surgery and the period of reduced activity before it can cause significant muscle weakness.
  • Improve confidence: Many patients feel anxious about using their new joint. Guided practice builds trust in the surgery.
  • Speed up recovery: Patients who engage with physiotherapy early typically return to normal activities faster.

What does home-based rehab involve?

Your physiotherapist will visit you at home and work through a structured rehabilitation programme. Here's what to expect:

Weeks 1–2: Early recovery

  • Gentle range-of-motion exercises to keep the joint moving
  • Swelling management with ice and elevation guidance
  • Safe transfers — getting in and out of bed, chairs, and the car
  • Walking practice with your frame or crutches
  • Wound care awareness and what to watch for

Weeks 3–6: Building strength

  • Progressive strengthening exercises for the muscles around the joint
  • Balance work to improve stability and confidence
  • Stair practice — we work on your actual stairs at home
  • Reducing reliance on walking aids as appropriate
  • Functional tasks — kitchen, bathroom, getting dressed

Weeks 6–12: Return to normal

  • More challenging exercises to build endurance and power
  • Outdoor walking practice if not already started
  • Activity-specific rehab — gardening, shopping, driving readiness
  • Goal-setting for return to hobbies and social activities
  • Long-term exercise plan to maintain your progress

Hip replacement vs. knee replacement: key differences

After hip replacement

The main focus is on restoring hip range of motion and strengthening the muscles around the hip. You'll need to follow specific movement precautions in the early weeks (depending on the surgical approach used). Your physiotherapist will ensure you understand these and can move safely within the guidelines.

After knee replacement

Knee replacements typically require more intensive work on bending (flexion) the knee. Swelling management is particularly important. Your physiotherapist will help you work through the stiffness and gradually improve your range of motion. Read about common mistakes after knee replacement.

Local hospitals serving Warwickshire

Many of our patients in Warwickshire have their surgery at:

  • University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire (UHCW) — the main trauma and orthopaedic centre for the region
  • Hospital of St Cross, Rugby — part of UHCW, providing planned orthopaedic surgery
  • George Eliot Hospital, Nuneaton — serving North Warwickshire
  • Warwick Hospital — South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust

Wherever you had your surgery, we can begin home physiotherapy as soon as you're discharged and your consultant has cleared you for rehab — often within the first week.

Tips for a successful recovery

  • Do your exercises daily: Consistency is more important than intensity. Little and often beats one long session.
  • Use ice for swelling: 15–20 minutes with a cloth between the ice and your skin, several times a day.
  • Elevate when resting: Keep your operated leg elevated when sitting to help reduce swelling.
  • Don't push through sharp pain: Some discomfort is normal during rehab, but sharp or increasing pain is a signal to ease off.
  • Stay positive: Recovery after joint replacement takes time. There will be good days and harder days. Stick with your programme.
